  • What is the 3MT contest?
  • Points regarding evaluation
  • Rules of the contest
  • How to submit your speech
  What is the 3MT contest?
The 3 Minute thesis competition is a contest by which you explain the content of your research as clearly as possible in the period of 3 minutes.
This form of competition began in 2008 at Queensland University, in Australia and currently occurs popularly at various universities around Australia.
At this site you can find the English version of the explanation of the 3MT speech.
This contest has also spread to Japan. At Hiroshima University, a ‘Future professor 3 minute speech competition 2015’ was held.
In order to achieve an effective speech, one point would be to express technical terms and highly specialised research contents in a simple manner so that people outside your research area are able to understand your research contents easily.
A 3MT speech in Japanese would be approximately 900 characters. You can download a sample 3MT speech from this link.
Points about evaluation
At this symposium, the language for presentation is restricted to Japanese. The speech will be evaluated through peer evaluation using the below criteria.
Why peer evaluation?
The peer evaluation enhances the understanding of one another and their research and to create an opportunity to expand on social network. Each speech will be evaluated using the below criteria. Evaluation sheets provided on the day will include scores and a comment section. The comments, if any, will be given to the presenters for reference.
Criteria for evaluation
1. Comprehension (Understanding of content)
  • Is the purpose and synopsis of the research included?
  • Is the organization of the speech easily understood?
  • Is terminology of the research area explained?
2. Performance Usefulness/Expressiveness
  • Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their work?
  • Did the presenter capture and maintain interest?
  • Did the presenter maintain a steady pace and confident stance?
3. Significance
  • Did the presenter explain why this topic is of significance to the community?
  • What is significant about this research?
The performance of the speech is highly valued in this competition. Presenters should avoid reading off palm cards but instead present in a manner that maintains the audiences interest and attention.
Rules of the contest
The seven points below is a checklist for the speech:
  1. A maximum of two slides, if using powerpoints.
Slide 1: Name, Affiliation, Research area and email address
Slide 2: A representation of the research content (illustrations or photos are permitted)
Please see the link below for a sample of PowerPoint.
Access to the sample PowerPoint
  1. No additional electronic media (sound or video files) are permitted
  1. No additional props (Costumes, musical instruments, equipment etc) are permitted
  1. Presentations are to be spoken words (no poems, raps or songs)
  1. Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum. Speeches exceeding 3 minutes will be penalized. The presenter who reaches 3:10 will be asked to stop speaking. A “終了30秒前(30 seconds before end)” sign will be displayed at 2:30 minutes and “終了(end)” sign at 3 minutes.
  1. The result of the peer evaluation is final.
  1. The presenter with the highest score will be awarded at the closing ceremony
Speech submission
The Japanese speech script is to be submitted to the Postgraduate Symposium committee via email icjle2016graduatesymposium@gmail.com). For more information refer to the travel grant page (the grant application submission date is to be announced on the webpage).
PowerPoint slides are due 15 AUGUST 2016 to the postgraduate symposium committee via email icjle2016graduatesymposium@gmail.com
